  •  They Think the Country's Swarming With Takers (16+ / 0-)

so the 47% number wouldn't make them bat an eye.

    •  The takers are always the other guy (12+ / 0-)

not them. Not their mom on social security, or their brother with a VA loan, or their sister on a pell grant, or their cousin with an autistic child getting medicaid assistance.

They think 150,000,000 Americans are black and on welfare when they hear that 47% figure, just like foreign aid is 30% of the budget. It's totally delusional, but the republican party has played the song so long, they have a bunch of people who believe it. Wages have been flat for 30 years and it's got to be somebody's fault.

All this attention may, actually, cause a few people to wake up, but many will continue rock along in their own little madeup world.

      •   actually no one on welfare or (0+ / 0-)

otherwise totally dependent on government allotments and maybe charity would not be included in the 47%.

The 47% is of those who file income taxes but whose federal income tax obligation minus and credits results in 0 taxes being owed.

Many of those get a big refund at the end of the year if they had  withholding from wages. Some of those owing $0 in federal income taxes are at the very top end off the income ladder; even in the top 400 returns.

    •  I've been going around and around (14+ / 0-)

with some Facebook "friends of friends"

They are all up in arms until you try to pin them down on exactly how many of the 47% are the welfare mooches they are so concerned about.  When you bring up the elderly, disabled, working poor, etc, etc,  they drag out anecdotes about all the welfare moochers they see when they drive through the "wrong side of town" which really tells you where they are coming from....then revert right back to railing at the 47% as if the entire conversation never happened.

why they get hung up about a really tiny number of moochers and use that as an excuse to take away help from the deserving and hard working vast majority of Americans who at times need assistance and one way or another have earned it makes no sense at all.

To feel like they are somehow punishing the moochers that hide under their bed by hurting other people like themselves just shows how limited their world view and their empathy is.

They would maim the Nation to combat a mostly imaginary social contagion.... projecting their fear and anger with actually miniscule number of cheaters or "lazy" people onto huge swathes of their fellow citizens who do not merit this calumny in any way at all.

      •  no welfare moochers would be included (0+ / 0-)

because they would file income tax returns in the first place.

        See my comment above.
