  •  A "battle ground" can be a rout... (3+ / 0-)

Where the campaigns are both spending money are obviously the battle ground states by definition.  But at the same time, if Obama is just crushing Romney in say OH, that means the state can be solidly in his column despite being a battleground.

Romney simply has no reason to retreat from OH or any further than that.  He can give up PA, but once the other states like OH, VA, FL flip he's already lost.  So, he'll spend there until the bitter end.

On the one hand, Romney may be able to give up on California, Oregon, Washington, New York, and Pennsylvania--for example--but if he gives up on Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc etc....what?  Romney's going to be campaigning only to win 200 or so electoral votes?  Or maybe, win by a larger margins in Texas and Missouri?

The ONLY politician I can think of who thinks like that is Sarah Palin, who in HER OWN BOOK, defends her idiocy of still wanting to campaign in Michigan, as opposed to states where McCain still had a chance.

If you haven't read about Sarah Palin in John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's book, Game Change, or in The Battle for America, by Dan Balz and Haynes Johnson, you really should.  Especially if you need to feel better about yourself.

In order to win Romney has to win most of the states where he is still competing. He has little room left for error.

But what I am saying is that if you see a poll, like the one above, that implies that Romney is almost tied in PA, it is hard to take it seriously when neither campaign considers it important to advertise or make appearances here. When that dynamic changes, only then is there any indication that the state is really in play.

There's smart, and there's K-mart smart. Sarah Palin is K-mart smart.
