  •  There is no profit in restoring the climate.... (3+ / 0-)

and until there is, we won't do a damn thing about it. Until corporate America and the political status quo is forced to fundamentally change the economic model based on relatively cheap energy and exploitative transactional behavior, we won't address the climate issue effectively. It is not about living softly on the Earth, it has gotten beyond that now, it is about human survival. We will not survive as a species if the median temperature of the biosphere is raised over 4 degrees centigrade, and we will blow through that number in less than a generation if we don't change the current trajectory immediately. It really is that simple, change the trajectory or ride the current train into cultural and societal extinction, possibly extinction of Homo Sapiens altogether.

Small community action is admirable, but solar stoves and recycling while eating locally, is not going to build the necessary pressure to change the political direction and economic system that is driving us to disaster. This is the greatest challenge humanity in the 21st Century has to face, and we are not dealing with it.

I am forming a community garden. I am planting trees. I am reducing my own energy needs as much as I can.

If everyone does something, there will be a cumulative effect. I have to believe that. Otherwise it all seems very grim.

The biggest persuasion to do something for ordinary folks is going to be the shortage of meat and cereal grains and very high food prices.  Farmers are slaughtering cattle because they cannot feed them as I type.
