    you are supposed to shop around on the "free market" for the most effective and least costly health care.

      The facts are that health care, especially emergency health care is not the kind of thing that has a "market".  There is little or no choice about where to go or who to see, and very often, the patient never gets to make such a choice as emergency patients are often unconscious, in an ambulance where the decisions are in the hands of paramedics, or so anxious that the closest ER is the default choice.
           When you go to the market, you get to compare price, quality, effectiveness, vendor or manufacturer reliability, etc.  Health care, legal service and other professional services do not fit the "market" model that is appropriate to food, automobiles and widgets generally.

      Patriotism may be the last refuge of scoundrels, but religion is assuredly the first.
