than legislative and policy analysis, but he's probably right on that. unless reid can makes some moves at the start of the session, there is no chance.

are we OK with lowering the threshold for filibuster, given that there will be some time during the future that the GOP will be in control of the Senate? I'm sure Reid is thinking of that eventuality.  Maybe if he heard from rank and file Dems to the effect that they are prepared to take that risk?

it's about the principle. it also would help clarify the issues, and what the parties stand for.

        •  We're pretty much in an emergency these days, (0+ / 0-)

whether you consider domestic, foreign, or economic realities. We really really can't afford any more Republican blockages on getting the right things done. Nor Blue Dog.

Plus, if Repubs can continue to block, that hurts our list of palpable accomplishments in 2014 and 2016, and thus makes the fight all that much harder.

If things continue we are about to see the Republicans make themselves a permanent fringe party, and we can a) help them do that by voting the right things for the nation and people while they futilely oppose them, b) thusly keep a hold for perhaps a decade or so on politics, c) show Blue Dogs that real Democratic policies are winners.

And we need a full-out "grab the House" campaign as well.

I totally disagree with changing it from 60 to 55 because we could have a scenario where the GOP controls the Senate someday and they could just ram through horrendous legislation virtually unchecked.

What I'd advocate is changing the rules about how filibusters are conducted...if a filibuster is declared the only way to maintain the filibuster is to continue speaking, with only 5 minute delays between speakers...basically a means to physically wear out senators who attempt to conduct a filibuster
