  •  I've heard it described as basically saying (4+ / 0-)

"You'll hit me like an equal or not at all!"

The two-mile pack-carry meant the owner of the pack got ye olde fashioned Roman 'you broke the military regulations, soldier' beating.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

    •  I don't know where you heard that but (0+ / 0-)

it has absolutely nothing to do with the teaching of Jesus, the context of the scriptural passage, or frankly, anything else.  If there is one consistent message in the gospels, it is not to return evil for evil.  This doesn't mean once can't defend oneself but it certainly is not advocating an emphasis on prestige or violent assault on someone who says something nasty to you.

      •  Except that the soldier could always demand (0+ / 0-)

that the pack be given back. The person who struck one cheek could always back away rather than strike again. The person given all of someone's clothes instead of just the outermost cloak after a lawsuit could always look away and hand the extra clothing back.

Unless making another work for him beyond the limits of Roman law proved too enticing. Unless he absolutely had to get that second hit in. Unless someone was just that damn greedy that taking more than the law allowed in court, down to stripping someone naked or nearly so over a simple debt, was fine with them.

The idea wasn't to actively harm the oppressor, but to give him enough room that oppressing you to the limits you'll allow harms himself.

What the women did to the cleric certainly doesn't fall within those bounds. Certainly the statement to cover his eyes would have, and perhaps a loud declaration to the neighborhood that a pervert in cleric's robes was on the street declaring improper interest in modest women would have as well.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
