  •  I had a similar experience with Keith Jarrett (7+ / 0-)

    and members of his "American" Quartet at the Vanguard in 1974 (?).

    More down to earth than I would've expected, btw.

    We were thrilled to death as we sat in on their conversations (Paul Motian was going on about his new Sony TV!), but  when the time came to play it was like something else took over and they were different people.

    It was an unbelievable set, too.

    I also mention this because of the Keith Jarrett letter that Denise quoted. Keith can be a prickly kind of a guy, but on musical matters, he is usually about 99% right.

    I'll post some other thoughts as I go through the comments.
