  •  There is a long history of discrimination against (19+ / 0-)

people, no matter how white they appear, who are considered Native Americans in ancestry.

Tribal membership in the Eastern tribes was not dependent on relationships as we understand them today. Eastern Indians routinely intermarried with Scottish traders and other Europeans -- the status of the mother determined stature.

But offspring of mixed couples were full members of the tribes and the color of the skin was irrelevant. In fact, many Indians in the East, Georgia west into Mississippi to Florida were more of white ancestry than Indian. But they were in the meaning of the time full blooded and full members of the tribes.

The indians who were removed to Oklahoma for the most part came from the South and their offspring affected neighboring states. And there was prejudice. Many families have stories that are not well documented about NA ancestors. You connot judge from the color of the skin with any degree of regularity. there are similar issues with other tribes. Some have limited mixed race backgrounds. It's idiotic of him to make a call based on her skin color - or mine.

    •  You can't tell from skin color in general. (12+ / 0-)

Even some children of parents of two different ethnicities will look like one or the other.  Usually they fall somewhere in the middle, but not always.  So, you just can't tell from looking at someone what sort of background they have-- not even their immediate parents.

    •  All fine and good (0+ / 0-)

I do not believe that Warren was ever subject to said discrimination, and she has never claimed that she was, or even claimed that others identified her or her family as Native American.  Regardless, she does not fit the definition of Native American for employment purposes, which requires a tribal affiliation.  She is white and she should have checked the white box on all of those forms, no matter whether she intended to gain an advantage or not.  To do otherwise apparently allowed the schools who employed her to count her as a minority, which she is not.

      •  Papers please... or free society. What happened.. (0+ / 0-)

in our family (written up in a genealogy research) is a story about one of our ancestors getting married into a Cherokee Tribe.

After the ceremony, attended by almost all
.....native AMERICANS... you know, the folks who were here first...the new groom asked the Chief of the Tribe for the Marriage Certificate.  He replied... We do not use or need a piece of paper in our culture to know that you are married in the eyes of our people and creator.

Keep in mind that many courthouses burned down with all records lost during that time as well.

Brown and the Repugs wish us to go BACKWARDS instead of actually celebrating our diverse heritage.  He is hiding from his dismal record, of course... to continue the divide and conquer routine that used to work for them.

Our Country needs to dump the rich, racist, psychopaths currently running their old boy country club.  They do nothing but enrich themselves -- while putting anyone not in their club down.  UN-AMERICAN.

        NO MORE.
        CHANGE IS HERE.

        Go Warren!

        •  Celebrating heritage is one thing (0+ / 0-)

But this is not about celebrating heritage, it is about filling out employment applications and the like, where identifying yourself as a minority can benefit you or allow the employer to fulfill obligations or goals as far as minority hiring.  Certainly in that context we are not "free" to arbitrarily claim to be whatever minority we choose to be.

            matter.  We are ALL mutts.

WHY insist that she "arbitrarily claimed something"... what is your beef.

Browns voting record and despicable behavior is all I need to know.

Are you not tired of racist rich guys putting women and all people of color down... to score a few points.

It is well past time for divide and conquer to stop now.

We have criminal BushCos mess to clean up... and Warren is one of the folks most qualified to do so.  THAT is the REAL ISSUE!

You're going way off the tracks here.  I like Warren, would vote for Warren, want Warren to win, etc.  I don't believe she did what she did to get a personal advantage.  I don't think that the election should turn on this matter.

That being said, Warren made a mistake when she checked those boxes on employment related forms claiming she was a Native American.  Furthermore, as a lawyer, I think she should have known better.  That is all.

"The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself.

That, in its essence, is fascism—ownership of government by an individual, by a group, [read corporations and financial organizations],or by any other controlling private power." -
