  •  Arkansas? (3+ / 0-)

Aside from Herb Rule getting a DWI on the Hill, I just don't get it. Why must we vote against our economic interests every time?  Oh, that's right, because of all the crazy evangelicals. I feel like I live in an alternate universe!  Karl Rove's protege wins my district not once, but two times?  I really need to move to a blue state.

    •  The worst thing about Arkansas (4+ / 0-)

is that this is a Democratic redistricting plan that is about to deliver 4-0 for the GOP.

This is what Will Rogers was thinking when he said "I'm not a member of any organized political party. I'm a Democrat."

    •  What's happening in Arkansas... (6+ / 0-)

...is that it's one of the last places to experience the Southern Realignment.  There is very little anyone can do about this.  It's just a delay from what was going to happen, anyway.  Were it not for Bill, Arkansas would have realigned with the rest of them.

from the deep south, having migrated there to grow cotton and such, which would explain this? Is there a large Scots-Irish heritage among its whites?

        •  It's a firmly Upper South state (1+ / 0-)

so yes, it's pretty Scots-Irish, though like most Southern whites they tend to identify ethnically as 'American' with no qualifiers. But it's probably more like Tennessee or Kentucky than like Louisiana or Mississippi. That said, the Upper South is now realigning as well- note that Democrats lost the TN legislature in 2008 of all years!

Male, 22, -4.75/-6.92, born and raised TN-05, now WI-02, remorseless supporter of Walker's recall. Pocan for Congress and Baldwin for Senate!

      •  Arkansas and West Virginia (0+ / 0-)

It's the fringe from the deep south, where few Latino's immigrate to, so in effect their is few electoral prospects for the Dems in the future. You could compare it with West Virginia which is also undergoing the same process. other states in the South are trending more Dem friendly, but those states are still going the opposite way...

        •  If only because of coal... (0+ / 0-)

...I think we'll get quite a few more nominally Democratic governors and such at the state level out of West Virginia.  It'll be the absolute last place the realignment touches.
