    well, I know that's common among progressives ... which is too bad because it ignores electoral politics.  He could not abolish slavery in 1861 without losing loyal Democrats.  He could do it in 1862 as a "military necessity."

    And the founders ... were all about moderation, for better or worse.  Probably for worse.  The Constitution is nothing but a mountain of compromises worked in 1787.

    I guess you don't like Obama either?  Too much of a compromiser?  And that may be true, but that also makes him that much more like Lincoln.  Again, for better or worse.

      My family had many victims of the holocaust, my cousin was a refugee from Austria who personally informed Eisenhower about the ovens--in 1942   Did we bomb the rail lines leading to those ovens?  No, we played it safe--waiting for the right time to expose the information--and then claimed the camps weren't military targets.
      Slavery's story was less severe, but, the outline is quite similar.  Enablers always find excuses to put off what is demanded morally--and enablers are the devil's trusted friends.
