"overwhelmed" factor at this point.  Right now, they need access to food to feed hungry people.  Anything else is extraneous.  Health issues are on Cindy's radar for the long term, believe me.

it was always an adventure, seeing what edible food was available. I turned in one pantry to the central food bank.
Years before that, I had been one of the top 400 fund raisers for The Walk for Hunger, a big thing here in Boston. One of the top 400 of 30K people.

Going to college on the trolley each morning I sometimes saw a 10 or 12 year old girl, always by herself, eating a candy bar, or a cracker type thingie. I started carrying peanut butter sandwhiches, and fruit, if there was any in the fridge. Such frustration, seeing a child alone and eating like that.

Want to metamorph into Buffet or Gates right NOW.

I see them with the candy bars and the 64-oz. sodas - or worse, Red Bull.

Of course, this country's whole system of education, health care, and nutrition is set up in exactly the wrong ways for kids to succeed - especially those who are starting with serious disadvantages.  Yeah, if I were Gates . . . .

        •  Boston Medical Center, the hospital complex that (0+ / 0-)

gets everybody from the neighborhood health centers, has both a foodbank, and a bookbank. Doctors write prescriptions for children and pregnant or nursing moms. That has improved the health of those groups so much.

The education of the mother determines how well a child does in life. Eating the right foods and vitamins during pregnancy, during nursing, knowing that nursing is very important. Knowing that the first few years with the right foods has a lifelong impact on the child. Even if the mother is poor, or her life situation changes, that and other knowledge of the mother are so important.
