  •  My understanding is that the comment rating, and (7+ / 0-)

Mojo counters have been broken since the conversion to DK4 and as far as I know we have no plans to fix this.

If so, we should take it down as they now apparently report the  counts from long ago.  Or, if this is too much of a format change, we should at least put one of those "function broken" signs over it.

Another, feature that  would be useful and could replace the space would be a simple counter of tips received to comments.

    •  This is off the subject, but really want to know. (6+ / 0-)

Is clicking on Recommend  the same as recommending the diary?

What about clicking on the tip jar?  What does that do?

      •  They do different things (6+ / 0-)

Clicking on "Recommend" shows support for the diarist's work (if not the diarist's specific point of view) and, if enough people do it, can land the diary on the Recommended list on the front page, giving it a longer stay in an area people tend to browse more than, say, the oldest diaries at the bottom of the "Recent" list.

Rec'ing the tip jar adds to the diarist's personal mojo, reinforcing the diarist's Trusted User status (which is where Hide powers come from) and making the diarist less likely to expire under the ban hammer or be dissed by snerts with higher mojo.

You'll see happy messages from people saying they've "T&R'd" a diary, meaning they've taken both steps.

      •  You can't click a tip jar. (2+ / 0-)

You can Rec a tip jar. And you can Recommend a diary. Those are different things. To Recommend a diary, yes, you click on Recommend. If you click on it twice, the diary is unrecommended.

      •  Yes, clicking recommend recommends the diary, and (6+ / 0-)

that count is used to select which post are highlighted under the Recommended "Big Board" on the right of the front page.

Also, these counts are accumulated and used to rank authors according to their accumulated total since they've been here.  If you select the People option in top Menu you get five sub-options, and Total Recs is the first, which seems to work ok.

Given a tip to a tip jar, or any other comment is much appreciated by authors, but may not do anything at present.
At one point long ago, I think it was included with rec in the total Mojo count, which is still displayed but apparently hasn't changed for about a year and a half.

There is a short term "Mojo-like" function that does work that determines the recommended post rank on the Recommended list.  This seems to combine recs and tips, and then discounted them over time, in what is probably a sensible way.

There also use to be a comment ranting (or something similary) that appeared to be the total number of tips you gave to other comments (but may have been received), but this has not worked for 1.5 to 2 years.  It is also still displayed with no label that it is broken.

It seems appropriate and a good idea  that a "grass roots" Democratic site like ours should honor, and encourage  the participation of commenters with counters of tips given and received by the 99% that are mostly readers, and commenters, but do not post.

Of our over 500,000 UIDs probably less than 500 are primarily, or exclusively posters, rather than commenters.

Actually, probably many fewer than that, (more like 20 - 50)   Many of the front pagers seem to do little commenting. We seem to have several thousands of writers who do a mix, but, most with even more comments than posts. And, many times that many who almost exclusively comment, but make highly valuable contributions here, that seem worthy of symbolic appreciation.

If there are "unsolvable technical challenges that surpass our limited resources this should be explained, and perhaps, even "crowd-sourced."  Failing that we should remove them rather than leave them rotting on the vine.

    •  Yes, I just double checked. Just as a data point (2+ / 0-)

my own Mojo has been locked next to a fellow who hasn't posted in over two years, and has made a comment in over a year.  Since then I've received several thousands of recs, and probably many times that many tips on comments.  Enough to move me up 3 pages on the total rec counter list in the people function.

So, from this I infer that the Mojo function under the People Function  has been broken at least a year.  Someone who seemed to know, told me the comment rating counter has been broken for at least a year an a half.  Probably back to the DK4 conversion.

      Aren't these just sort counters?

Has there ever been any announcement of what plans, if any exist for fixing these?  If there are none, wouldn't it be better to take them off? Having things remain broken for so long, with no plans to fix them becomes sort of demoralizing and embarrassing.

In many other ways, we have a world class operation here.  We shouldn't demean our reputations by keeping such major dysfunction so prominently highlighted in our major site mastheads.
