to get rid of undeserved and unearned special privileges for some. I understand why a person of modest means should be able to pass on their modest assets to their heirs. But we're talking about millionaires. They'll get over it. Especially given that they still get to keep most of it anyway.

    •  But keeping most of it isn't enough. (2+ / 0-)

As a matter of fact, anything less than keeping all of it is downright socialist.  And obviously therefore un-American.  And who knows what else.

          They whinny.

But beyond that, I agree with you and am alternately shocked and fascinated and scared that Romney talks so unabashedly about the virtues of the 1% and yet is supported by so many who will never ever in a gazillion years be a part of it and who will actually be further away from ever being part of it if he is elected.

as they hate the other side passionately. These people are some combination of unhinged, racist, stupid, tribalist and ignorant, and the fact that Romney is a rich elitist asshole simply doesn't register even if they know it. He's on their side, and that's all that matters. The trick for our side is to find ways to separate their identity politics from their actual self-interest, and make them increasingly vote the latter. I think it can be done, just not overnight. Hopefully we've got some marketing geniuses working overtime on this. I hate to say it but in many ways it's a marketing problem. People like them are obviously beyond the reach of just reason. They need to be manipulated--for their own good.

Specifically designed to keep inherited wealth away from the tax collector.

      •  Maybe for some (0+ / 0-)

estate tax and the never mentioned generation skipping transfer tax, but paying income taxes on trusts is really bad.. you get to the top rate almost immediately (like $10,000) so you never want to pay income tax in a trust.

      •  Or charitable contributions (0+ / 0-)

We owe many of our institutions of high culture to the estate tax.
