    It took me until my 40s to learn that I had a right to say "no."  Now I am in my 60s and though I learn slowly I have learned that "nice" is highly overrated and usually just a weapon of social control.  You do not need to stay in toxic environments or make nice to people who behave in manipulative or abusive manners.  Surround yourself with people who nourish you, not drain you.  (Nourishing people are not just blind supporters; they may challenge you as well, but they are still there for you, not insulting you all the time.)

    You did the right thing and making nice is not appropriate.
