  •  MA - weird state (1+ / 0-)

For a state that is supposedly so progressive, they suffer from a lot of racism . ANd now we hear they are not progressive with women in politics.

Back in the days before the feminist movement.

    •  Massachusetts is less progressive than thought. (0+ / 0-)

I've lived here my whole life (43 years, and at least semi-active in politics since age 15).  The truth is that in Mass. the Democratic party in the state is simply larger and better organized than the Republicans.  This superior organization has enabled Democrats to win a lot more races than we "should."  Similarly, because the Republican party is so small, many center-right politicans run as Democarats--the same way many less right wing politicians in places like Wyoming will run as Republicans.

In short, don't blame Massachusetts for not being a hippie paradise--instead praise Massachusetts Democrats for doing an outstanding job winning race after race such that, despite a somewhat conservative population in many areas, we aren't considered a swing state.

    •  I grew up there (0+ / 0-)

MA doesn't exactly have a long history of racial harmony (see the busing riots in the 70's).

I grew up just outside of Boston (Newton) and, in hindsight, most of my friends were angry white Italian- and Irish-Catholic racist/sexists, and I don't claim to have been much different at the time.   Not even close to the progressive image MA currently enjoys.  The dog-whistle tactics Brown is using has their stink all over it.

There also seems to be this weird sports-politics culture there, with radio shows (e.g. Dennis & Callahan) that have this bizarre mashup of  right wing politics and sports talk for "regular guys" (i.e. angry white Irish/Italian Catholics).  I recently saw a picture of Scott Brown giving a speech with Doug Flutie standing by his side, and don't even get me started on Curt Schilling.  I guess this is similar to the kind of brainwashing Evangelicals get in the South, but using sports instead of religion.  Pathetic.

      •  I repeat-this line of commentary is offensive (0+ / 0-)

Mass. is also known as a state where many immigrant groups got their start in the Mills in the 1840's and  followed by waves and waves of immigrants from all over the world.  In fact, it's the western part of the state that's more conservative.

As one who is Irish Catholic and working for Obama/Warren/JPK 4-5 days a week and have been for months, this is a really offensive line of attack.   Many of the people who are most active in these campaigns are Irish.  Lots of wealthy Newtonites are sitting at home patting themselves on the back for being so liberal but won't lift a finger.

The busing debacle was a situation where wealthy Boston Wasps set the two poorest communities up against each other.  Children from Beacon Hill and Back Bay were not bussed anywhere.  It's a much more complex story than is commonly known.

I am of Irish descent. I am a proud liberal, feminist woman. I was not raised in a sexist home. My parents always believed I should pursue any career I wanted. My parents are liberal Catholics. You should take a good look at your own prejudices. You certainly have plenty of them.
