    Nixon put Ford up for VP for the same reason he kept Agnew on the ticket in 1972--as his last line of defense against impeachment & removal. That trickiest of Dicks figured no Congress in its right mind would remove him from office if it meant promoting a know-nothing race-baiting sonofabitch (Agnew) or a genial bumbling oaf (Ford) to the Oval Office.

    He was, of course, as with so many other things, wrong.

      Pretty sure that Ford had a pretty important position in the House, possibly even Minority Leader. He didn't get that bumbling oaf reputation until after he became President.
