but I have multiple points of "anecdata" in different fields (okay,  physics, math, and computer science),  and if you're flexible about not working on what you did for you dissertation,  there's good work out there...

or maybe extrapolating too much from math, CS and physics to "all of STEM"

    •  Bioscience (molecular virology) is my bag. (2+ / 0-)

Maybe I'm extrapolating too much from bioscience to all of STEM, but that's the situation right now.  Different fields ARE different - chemical engineers, for example, are still doing okay, from all I have heard.  But molecular biologists, biological chemists, virologists, immunologists, and so on...

Bioscientists are in the same boat as Renaissance Literature people right now, save for the whole "postdoc" thing.

...nobody will hire you within bioscience EXCEPT for, approximately, what was done in dissertation and postdoc work.  E.g. not necessarily plant virology (for me), but virology and molecular genetics.  And my attempts to find work in related fields (educational mostly, such as museum exhibit development) have hit absolute brick walls thanks to the Depression.
