    to college these days, paying for staff should not be a problem.  Something in the budget does not make sense.

    •  The point is that the money isn't fungible (4+ / 0-)

      that is, you may have $5m for a new building but need to cut $2m from your staff budget. You can't avoid the cuts in your staff budget by using the new building money.

      As to why your staff budget is low, that's a wholly separate problem.

      For state schools, the state is putting in a lot less than it used to.

      For private schools, endowments that once could be counted on to earn 8%-10% annually are currently earning 1%.

      Of course, other factors are in play as well.
