If someone starts with the premise (as many do) that Romney is a fine, upstanding, honest man who loves his country, then they have no reason to want to see his tax returns, because all they would expect the returns to do is confirm that yes, Mitt Romney is rich. They may even go so far as to say yes, Mitt Romney is rich, and in this country there are tax provisions that rich people can sometimes take advantage of to lower their taxes, so presumably Romney did so. The details don't matter.

The details only begin to matter if they demonstrate ways in which he is not in fact such a fine, upstanding, America-loving honest man. We in Left Blogistan have suspicions about that, so we want to see his returns to confirm or deny our suspicions. Those without suspicions don't have a reason to care about the returns.
