    Not the true definition, of course, because we have a different large organization with great power over our bodies standing in place of the government, but close enough for the purpose at hand.

    The hospitals -- and/or their corporate owners -- become taxing bodies with the power to make us pay for all of that needlessly expensive care.

    It's an incredible redistribution of wealth :

    A small sliver to the people who get treated.
    It's a small sliver because the true value to them is not the inflated emergency room price, but the cost that would applied if reasonable care options were available.

    A big fat hunk to the hospitals.

    And, of course, a big fat hunk out of the wallets of all the other patients.
