  •  Eesh. Way to make my point. (4+ / 0-)

It just discourages me to the bone that we are not able ever to have a discussion about what's effective--about what works.  Instead, what we have to do is kiss the holy ring of AA--even when we know it doesn't work very well.

A lot of us--A LOT OF US--are making our way through this issue, one bruising step at a time.  No matter how we go about it, it's really difficult.  No.  I mean it's REALLY difficult.  The help we need, the way we get through it--we each decide this on our own, and it really is a case of whatever works.  But let us please, for the love of god, stop talking like AA is the holy grail of substance abuse.  Sometimes--sometimes--it's the right approach.  For most of us, it isn't.

If you have a problem with alcohol abuse, chime in about what works.

If you don't, and you think AA and fairy dust are the solution, please stay seated with your hands down.  We'll call on you if we need you.

    •  PB, why don't you do your own post on this? (9+ / 0-)

Obviously there are people interested in the subject, while this post is by Matt presumably for Matt.

Everyone loves to chime in, but a little focus might be appropriate here.

I really don't know this - isn't there already a substance abuse DK group?

It appears to have a ready made constituency.

    •  I never said it was (5+ / 0-)

my point was to focus on Matt not have a hijack thread on the merits of different programs.  I just questioned the appropriateness of that discussion in this diary

      But I never said this

But let us please, for the love of god, stop talking like AA is the holy grail of substance abuse.
And this is pretty insulting as well

I did say rehab is the first best step

My experience, in and out of clinics six times now between 2005 and 2010, not only with alcoholism but also combat induced PTSD, Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder.

I noted in my first comment to Matt that rehab should be the first step, if he can swing it, as I feel it gives the best first chance at sobriety

      no staying seated for me

I agree with the 1st part, ( focus on Matt not have a hijack thread on the merits of different programs), so I sympathize in the sense of being able to criticize AA without losing the point of the thread, but he was trying to conduct an AA meeting for Matt, (he didn't announce it or call to order) that's just trying to help the best way we know how. There is a sign on the wall where I attend meetings most often, it says; "Take what you need and leave the rest."
