  •  Hey Matt - congrats! (11+ / 0-)

I'm sure you'll be getting a lot of assvice - that's unasked for advice;)

    Let me add mine:

Take SUPER good care of yourself for the next 6 months. Your body and brain will be going through a lot of changes and you are likely to be extra tired, more easily overwhelmed, more moody, etc....  Think of yourself as someone coming out of major surgery. You are a "delicate flower" these days. Or you might have days when you feel super awesome as your neurotransmitters re-regulate themselves!

Drink plenty of water to help your liver and kidneys do their job. Get lots of sleep, eat well (especially breakfast), get regular exercise in and keep your stress levels as low as you can manage. Let family and friends help you out and be willing to lean on others.

Depending on how much and how long you've been abusing alcohol, it could take 6-12 months before you really start feeling  'normal', so don't assume how you feel in the first few months is "what recovery feels like".

Definitely give AA a go, it's helped countless others. But plenty of people use SMART recovery, or group or individual therapy, or medication, or yoga, prayer, a running program, or some combination of the above. What you need now is likely not what you will need a year from now, etc... etc... be willing to try different things and be kind and forgiving as you figure it all out.

No two people's recovery plan is quite the same - that's part of the challenge.

Best of luck to you, and remember that if you keep away from the alcohol your body and brain will do their absolute best to heal.

    Lisa :)

All Kossacks are my allies, but if you can't express your thoughts in a civil and kind manner, I won't be engaging in a conversation with you.
