I can tell you that you are beginning a great adventure.  Life is a hell of a lot better after we come in out of the storm!

The first days are the hardest, but they are also some of the most remarkable you will ever experience.

I got sober in AA.  I followed around a bunch of crazy old-timers my first year.  Some were crazy like foxes.  Some were plain crazy.  :)  Among them, they had the wisdom of the ages and were happy to share it.  Also, a hell of a lot of fun.

Honestly -- EVERYONE hyperventilates over the God shit in AA at first.  Don't worry about it.  Go ahead and feel like a fucking moron as you say prayers you don't mean to a God you don't believe in.  It goes with the territory.  It works.  Don't try to figure it out.

Remember that you're trying to save your ass from a fatal disease that kills more of us than ever recover from it.  It's life and death -- right here -- right now.  You don't have the luxury of precious debates over atheism and religion and rationality.

If you do the deal, you will get more than sobriety.  You will have more peace and joy and FUN than you even knew was possible.

BTW -- my handle "recrum" is short for "Recovery Ruminations", a blog I kept my first year or so of recovery.  There is actually a GREAT recovery community on the internet, of all stripes and experiences, happy to support each other.  Or crash each others' blogs and throw parties in their comment threads...

Please don't hesitate to send me a private message.  I freely offer you my experience, strength and hope.

Prayers for you!  God bless you, Matt!  [And that's a genuine prayer to the God who came and found me right where I was! :)]

My name is Phil, I'm alcoholic, I'm grateful to be sober today and grateful I've been blessed with a long string of sober days.
