"ringer" candidates. They're designed to lose so someone else wins. It's consistent with the conservative MO of triangulation, ulterior motives and once-removed objectives -- indirection, deception and secrecy are their "tools" of choice. They excell at what we call underhanded behavior and dealing under the table.
Which tells you, by the way, that "all options are on the table" means people are dealing honestly. Of course, when you're dealing with people who specialize in threats, it means something else. Conservatives specialize in threats because they have nothing anyone wants.

Some of their stable of columnists are as corrupt as the people they purport to cover ... one guy on their payroll is also secreyly on the payroll of the state's largest health insurer. A former editor of theirs was a reporter on the take when I worked with the guy.

At the same time, that columnist did a decent job with Bolger-Schmidt in your linked piece ... kind of hard to spin that one any other way than correct.

Since when? I live in Michigan, and I've never heard of such a thing before this. And, while it is not specifically unlawful under election laws to do what these guys tried to do, it is likely that they are guilty of conspiracy to commit perjury. That investigation is ongoing. Note too that Schmidt was an incumbent Democrat whose district was made more Republican by redistricting, which was the inspiration for the subterfuge. Since the wave election in 2010, Republicans have controlled every part of the state government, and they've been running roughshod over everyone who doesn't agree with their far-right agenda.

This incident to high heaven, but the linked article presents no evidence that this is a common practice in Michigan.
