  •  My TEACHER taught me (12+ / 0-)

that we always want TWO helpings of dessert (thus reminding us kids that there are two s's in the word!)

    Thank you Miss Larkin!!

    •  So that's why (4+ / 0-)

I think my teachers must have said to always TAKE two helpings of dessert.

Damn. Maybe if they hadn't taught me how to spell, I'd be skinny.

      •  another one from Miss Larkin (5+ / 0-)

i guess alot of kids had problems with the word "friend"--mixing up the "i" and "e".

She taught us that in the end, they are always our friend:  now we know that friend ends in "end".

She taught me these things in the mid-60's and I STILL remember them!!

think that teachers like Miss Larkin are part of the problem - greedy union thugs! They must be crushed, their pensions taken away, and their jobs outsourced to charter school that pay teachers even less than public schools do.

        •  you have just shown one reason teachers are so (2+ / 0-)

important. Look how those tricks have helped you -- and that's probably just a small part of what you got in her class.
My daughter had a teacher last year in World Studies. He was hard as hell and she, only 11 years old, had to work her tail off to do well. Sometimes it was really frustrating. But she loved the class and he was her favorite teacher -- in fact he was the favorite of most of the kids in her program even though they all thought his class was very difficult. And that was out of a list of 7 teachers in that year, almost all of whom were very very good. All of them public school teachers and union members.
(this is not to defend bad teachers -- and my daughters have had a few over the course of their public school education. But I'd say less than 10% were inadequate, another 20% were okay at best, and the rest ranged from good to wonderful. The kind of statistics any profession should be proud of).
