    You argue that it's an entitlement, but IMO the problem is that the Roveians have succeeded in making "entitlement" a dirty word.  When I saw the word "entitlement" in the diary, I thought, "You're damned right I'm entitled!  I paid into Social Security my entire working life!  Taking it away now is outright thievery.".  But the pseudo-definition that's imbedded in the moran media now is that "entitlement" means money being showered on worthless slackers (Rich worthless slackers don't count).  The technical definition you present is (I think) correct, but not particularly useful.

    I would just say that Social Security is not the version of entitlement as defined by arrogant and hateful politicians and pundits.  Not sure where I'd go from there.

      original Social Security Act.

      That the term has additional meanings (many with negative connotations) does not make one of us correct when we say something like "it's not an entitlement".
