I was only 6 years old, and madly for Adlai in 1952. But we didn't yet own a TV set back then. If I'd seem his ads ...

Imagine a candidate famed for his warm wit and his eloquence, who refused to appear in TV commercials!

Adlai only allowed 30-minute speeches, at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, after many working people had gone to bed!

He would have lost the election anyway. The Democrats had been in the White House twenty years, and the Repubs were running the "most admired man in America", the World War II hero General Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower.

But from these examples, Adlai's TV campaign, one of the first ever, will surely stand as the worst ever.

So having a beauty sing their qualifications was a better idea than "New! Improved! Now with MORE wash-day power!"

        I don't think so.

The pity is, he would have been perfect for the sit-down-and-look-you-in-the-eye 2-minute ad. Sure, Adlai could do that: Serious. Thoughtful. Concerned. Sincere. Engaging. And no bullshit.

But instead they ran cartoons and torch songs. OMG. We have come a long way.
