and this time of year is when I am and only I of the millions of people I know , heh, am beset by something I can't see but seems to be on dry grass and in the dirt.
It doesn't jump or fly but legs it around, when it (adult form?) bites I have a giant 6" red area and a raised 1/2" welt that turns into an itching little volcano about 1/8" and then a tiny round scab forms.

I saw just one once, they come in on the cats, now banned in the dry season (pet them and be bit, so it's pet them and wash, quick), but come in on shoes and pants.

The one I saw, I just barely saw, then trapped it on a piece of handy cellophane tape, was transparent except for the gut and two eyes, and had greyish transparent legs and jaws/stabbers/pedipalps sticking straight out ahead. Vet didn't know. Very mite sized but transparent. (And didn't see it actually bite me, could have been something unrelated, a baby spider maybe)

Vacuuming, shaking out, pyrethrin sprays get them, good for a week indoors.

Never saw another, and they 'appeared' and stayed after a population explosion of raccoons back in the 90's.

But I am the only one that gets bit, if I put my hand on the ground or rug or cat or cat bed where they are, I feel their stings very soon after..several hot numb spots that usually but sometimes develop into the rash/volcano thing. They behave like Harvest mites, getting in around bottom of tee shirts, neck lines, arm openings and bite soon after. So maybe two forms of same bug, or two bugs.

After it rains and/or gets cold, they stop til next about July, hot and dry. And not all dry grass has them, but often.

Maybe I need flea treatment...nooo, kidding.

    This machine kills Fascists.
