  •  As he reached for the door handle... (6+ / 0-)

Clarse gritted his teeth as his mind flashed back to the days and weeks of tedium just getting to this point.

Finding drinkable water in the wilds, a decent place to sleep every night. Evading game wardens - and the larger beasts the wardens were trying to keep from getting too fat on travelers. The midges. The sweat. The lazy winds on cold nights that would blow through a man because they couldn't be bothered to go around. The accusing stars like a rash across the dark, staring down on those more accustomed to smoky city nights, where lights kept the sky at bay after sundown.

He recalled one day in particular; Bodrin had managed to bring down a deer. He remembered the feel of stripping the hide off the still warm body, of carefully working his knife along the belly to open it up and spill out the guts - NOT gashing the bladder and spilling urine all over the meat made all the more precious by days of short rations.

Using the inner surface of the spread hide for a working surface, he'd carefully cut up the carcass into meats for roasting over the fire Bodrin had built. The smell of roasting venison, the pangs of hunger while waiting for it to be done, the greasy satiation afterwards - could the reward on the other side of that door match the elemental satisfaction of that meal?

    Shit yeah, in spades!

To make the argument that the media has a left- or right-wing, or a liberal or a conservative bias, is like asking if the problem with Al-Qaeda is do they use too much oil in their hummus. Al Franken
