  •  How much is increased reporting (1+ / 0-)

One question I wold have regarding increased numbers is a recognition that some of this may be a change in reporting. How many incidents are now reported as what they are in reality but formerly not reported as hate crimes.

    •  It really is an important question you ask.... (0+ / 0-)

...but there is no way to tell for sure.  In terms of Massachusetts and law enforcement participating in providing the FBI with hate crime data, pretty much the same number of communities in Massachusetts report hate crimes to the FBI today as they did ten years ago.  But, I think that that is not what you are really getting at with your question.

As I communicated in the diary, I think that GLB folks probably do report more hate crimes today than they did in the 70's, 80's and even into the 90's.  But, I don't think that the mere passage of marriage equality in Massachusetts would casuse the GLBT community in Massachusetts to suddenly report more hate crimes to the police.  So, as I said in the diary, I think only some of what I've described and shown can be attributable to victims reporting more crimes to the police.  Indeed, two recent studies (2003 and 2009) showed that nationwide  55% to 56% of hate crimes were not reported to law enforcement.  These findings are from Bureau of Justice Statistics studies.

Failure to Publicize Acts of Hatred Only Allows Them to Fester and Metastasize.
