  •  With the exception of +1.25 hour, I'm (12+ / 0-)

right there with you. I'm signed up to work in the great state of California. Since I'm working in a precinct just a few minutes from my house, I'm hoping to sleep until 5:15 a.m. If I'm organized and have everything ready to go Monday night, maybe I can roll out of bed at 5:30 a.m. and drag myself to the polling place by 6:00 a.m. Our polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. We usually get done between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. which makes for a very long day.

There really aren't separate job titles but more like different assignments. Each precinct has one Inspector and everyone else are clerks. During the 2 hour mandatory training, everyone learns all of the jobs. The job that most people hate and I like is dealing with provisional voters. I also like working the roster but so does everyone else so getting that assignment can be somewhat competitive. It also can be a bit awkward to get somebody off the roster who no longer has (or never had) the skills necessary to do the job efficiently.

Although tiring, it's very rewarding at the end of the night to know that you had a small part in ensuring democracy for some of your fellow citizens. (Oh No, I'm sounding maudlin...cue America the Beautiful...) I especially enjoy helping someone who is voting for the first time.

I'm in San Mateo County (SF Bay Area), so I've got a pretty good idea of what your day is like. (See my mini-ramblefest below.)
