85% of the general election vote.  In the previous two elections he ran, the Democrats didn't even put up a candidate. There are many more moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats than voters on either extreme in Indiana, so when Donnelly runs ads appealing to the "moderates: he's talking to both parties.  Mourdock defeated Lugar in a low turn-out Primary with less than 10% of the numbers needed for a general election victory.  The Republicans are in serious HURT, here in Indiana, thank goodness.

    •  Yep, he was a well respected politician here (4+ / 0-)

Practically an Indiana Institution and to be snubbed like that in a primary, have the GOP turn their back on him during?

Its no surprise really Joe is ahead so far

Hell even I have great respect for Lugar, I loved his work on preventing nuclear proliferation and the creation of the  Cooperative Threat Reduction has made this world infinitely safer...even if some people think its a Defense Welfare project.

      •  Some day, Lugar will get his long deserved Nobel (8+ / 0-)

        Peace Prize.

When Obama wins in November, he would do well us use Lugar in some International capacity to help keep the lid on Nuclear prolification.

        •  Nunn-Lugar Program (6+ / 0-)

Thank you for reminding everyone about the positive and outstanding service Senator Lugar has provided to the United States and the world through his efforts crystallized in the Nunn-Lugar program.  Their far-sighted work did much to eliminate from global black-markets weapons which could have made the decade following the demise of the old Soviet Union literally a living hell.  It demonstrates what true bi-partisanship can accomplish.

the Nunn-Lugar program, the decade following the demise of the old Soviet Union would have been hell for intelligence agencies, third world nations (not that it isn't hell already but imagine worse) and we likely would have seen MANY more open conflicts and civil wars.

It made it easier for intelligence agencies to track the black marker weapons sales, which in turn allowed the US to prevent more attacks through non-proliferation of weapons.

In all likely hood without it, I would wager Iran would already have that nuclear option on the table.

        •  Nobel? Forget about Torture on his watch & Iraq (0+ / 0-)

war with all those WMDs.  Sorry but that disqualifies IMHO.

    •  Lugar won with 85% because no Dem Ran against (0+ / 0-)

him.  Jeez he should have won with 99% with only a libertarian candidate opposing him.
God the Lugar love here is foolish. Lugar voted almost exclusively with the republican leadership.
