  •  Dallas Morning News: (none)
The Pentagon on Friday recommended closing Naval Station Ingleside, Brooks City Base, Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant, Red River Army Depot and several smaller military installations in Texas. However, Texas will also gain more than 9,000 military jobs around the state. Six other military bases will be realigned, including Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Sheppard Air Force Base.

Rumsfeld also recommended closing the Naval Station in Pascagoula, Miss., which barely survived previous base closure rounds. The decision was a blow to Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., who had fought the 1995 round of closures. At stake are 844 military jobs and 112 civilian jobs.

    •  I'm surprised to see Red River on there (none)
I saw a piece on the news not to long ago about Red River.  They are hauling all the wrecked and blown up humvees from Iraq back to Red River and they are using scrap pieces to rebuild those they can.  They have also been working on armor kits for humvees.  I guess they'll just junk everything and buy new stuff for Iraq.

Ft. Hood is supposed to get around 5,000 more troops when they start bringing troops back from Germany.  Maybe they'll bring some MP's with them.  Ft. Hood has had to contract out the jobs of guarding the post to civilians.  The MP's were the first to ship out to Iraq.  Don't guess they ever came home.  Instead of jeeps, they rid around in police cars.  I sometimes wonder just how much money the DOD spends on civilian contracts on military bases.

Just as much as the friendly local R congressworm wants them to spend.

    •  Fort Bliss (none)
The El Paso Times says "Fort Bliss will gain an additional 11,500 soldiers and civilian jobs in the coming years under a Pentagon plan to be announced this morning, making El Paso the second-biggest winner in the proposed Base Realignment and Closure process." It then goes on to give Kay Bailey Hutchinson all the credit - she gets on my last nerve with all her form letter replies to my complaints.

Don't get me wrong, El Paso's economy really can use a boost from this, we have a 8% or worse unemployment rate here. However, most of our gains are at the cost of others losses. The real reason they wouldn't ever get rid of Fort Bliss is because it's right on the border, they have tons of desert land for drills and testing and wouldn't you know the Middle East has a lot of sand too! But hey lets give credit to Hutchinson!

Of course Fort Bliss is in sad need of updating. The housing is pathetic and now they're going to increase the number of soldiers living here so I hope they pay to make improvements while they're at it.
