Watched it with my dad, who's a vet. He never curses, very much the 'gentleman officer' in many regards. But watching that movie, it really seemed to strike some chords with him that were just beyond my ability to understand.

        •  My grandfather served in that war. He was shotdown (3+ / 0-)

over Europe, ended up a POW of Germany.

Marched across country in the winter.

I think for those of us who know someone who was serving in WWII, the knowledge going into the theater, that we would be seeing a hollywood version of reality was not enough.

Not nearly enough preparation for that depiction of the beaches of Normandy France. The sheer numbers, the graphic violence of the cannonballs, and the 50mm & 30mm machine gun embankments, strafing the waterline as the US soldiers disembarked from those amphibious landers...

some of us in those movie houses knowing that someone in the very theater with you might have been there.

It wasn't merely a movie for many of us.

It was the thunderous crack of War brought damned near to life for those of us always kept at arm's length from the reality that our loved ones had lived through, and come home from.

That's how it was for me. I walked out of the cinema, and next door to a bar, and had two drinks, while my mind tried to come to grips with just how much more horrible WWII was than I had ever imagined. So much worse.
