    Romney went for the same gimmick that McCain went for. You are a boring, lackluster candidate, so you pick the first shiny object that catches your eye. Reagan could choos the dull G.H. Bush because Reagan was the star. Clinton could choose the less exciting Gore for the same reason. Mondale's historic choice of Ferraro didn't suddenly turn Mondale into a scintillating campaigner. It's a remarkable constant of Presidential campaigns. The top of the ticket has to win. The minute a nominee makes a "bold choice" in order to "shake things up", that's the death knell right there. Romney isn't losing because of Ryan; he's losing and Ryan is Exhibit A.
