    he said "...still have preferences for things like charitable deductions, home purchases, health care."

    He leaves out the mortgage interest deduction, education deduction, earned income credit, and business tax credit for furnishing health care. I assume he means leaving the tax credit if you buy your own.

    Mortgage interest and the tax credit to businesses who purchase health care for employees are two of the more costly credits for the government. I'm pretty sure these are definitely on the chopping block, or he would have thrown them in.

      is the same as the mortgage interest deduction. The mortgage interest deduction is how the tax code expresses a preference for home purchase.

      We encourage buying your own house precisely by making mortgage interest tax deductible.

      You can't take one of those things off the table and not the other, because they are the same thing.
