correct about the perspective giving the fisheye effect. The 2nd picture from aoeu is more realistic in depicting no fisheye. The image was taken by Apollo 17 astronauts at a distance of about 45,000 kilometres (28,000 mi). That is about 3 x diameter of Earth. At that distance, the fisheye effect is minimal, but not gone. There is no one point where you would see 50% of Earth. You would approach it very closely as the distance grows.

Thanks for the question. And, thanks for the rec.

So when we look at the moon from the Earth's surface, we're seeing something very close to 50% because it's quite far away when compared to its diameter, correct?  And the photos of Earth from the moon are similarly pretty close to 50%?  Thanks again!

surface (from the Earth), but never at one time. It is because the moon 'rocks' a bit as it orbits, and its orbit is not perfectly circular. I believe the correct term is libation.

Also, in the Earth photos, we are seeing things directly in the middle at close to the way most of our maps represent the land masses. Things closer to the edge are curving away and the tilted perspective does tend to distort it a quite a bit.

It seems most folks don't have a globe in their home any more either. If you have one, you can see some of the distortion effects. Physiologically, it seems way more impressive when you are seeing an image of the real thing.

Wiki link: Libration. A libation is a ritual pouring of a liquid: Libation. Sometimes people refer to an alcoholic drink as a libation.

But the angle said to them, "Do not be Alfred. A sailor has been born to you"

and call it the "Libration Libation".  We'll make it with moonshine, of course.
