    I'll quibble about "direct derivative."

    Carpenter's The Thing owes much to John W. Campbell's story Who Goes There?

    I don't doubt for a second that Campbell borrowed from Lovecraft.

    Howard Hawks' and Christian Nyby's movie Thing From Another World was an adaptation of Campbell's tale, and Carpenter blended both together with touches of his own.
