  •  nobody is gonna bomb Iran (0+ / 0-)

If by some 2% miracle Romney gets elected, he isn't going to bomb Iran either. Why? Because there are hundreds of Iranian anti-shipping missiles lining the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf - missiles that can easily sink any tanker, and most American military vessels as well. Start shooting at Iran, and they might retaliate by closing the lanes where a third of the world's waterborne oil is shipped - oil that mostly provides the needs of Japan, China, Taiwan, India, and other Asian powers. How long can that go on before our peaceful (mostly) allies (mostly) are ready to rip our balls off?

Romney's a good businessman. He sees the balance sheet, or would if he looked.

If we start shooting at Iran in a way serious enough to destroy their nuclear facilities, they're going to shoot back. And then the shipping lanes close, and then we have to completely take out the Iranian government and military structure. That is NOT a trivial drone-bomb video game thing. That's a big, bloody, expensive war, followed by a big, bloody, expensive occupation.

    •  Plus, Iran is bigger than Iraq (0+ / 0-)

In land area, Iran is about four times the size of Iraq. In population, they're more than double (about 250%). Iran's GDP is roughly seven times the size of Iraq's. Iran has significant mountainous areas, which means it would be difficult to put boots on the ground.

I think a lot of people think Iran and Iraq are similar because their names are spelled about the same. Not true. Iran isn't even an Arab country.

When Romney talks about "our true allies in the Mideast," he's mostly talking about Israel. He's hoping to keep the evangelical voters (a lot of whom dislike Islamic countries, but love Israel) and win over the Jewish voters (some of whom want the U.S. to support Israel).

Romney is being simplistic. Yay Israel! Boo Iran! He doesn't understand that each country has its own problems and its own situations. I think Hillary Clinton has done a hell of a job as SOS. I shudder to think what someone like John Bolton might do.
