When the Tod Browning crew would wrap for the day, the Spanish crew would come in and shoot the same scenes on those sets. But the camerawork was much more fluid and mobile - instead of the static shots in the English version, the Spanish version had dolly and crane shots, especially effective in the introductory shot of Dracula, with the camera rising up the stairs to show him silhouetted against the giant spiderweb behind him, across the staircase.

Hey, how did he get through that web without breaking it? Well, he's Dracula!

(PS - those dolly shots were no small feat, in those days a camera dolly was the size of a small car - they needed to be to hold the cameras, which were the size of refrigerators!)

...that is great about the Spanish version - namely Lupita Tovar as Mina - but I've always contended that Browning's version is a better directed film.  In fact, it is my favorite debate to have in the wide world of Horror!  :-)

      •  Oh yes, Tod's is a better directed film (2+ / 0-)

If camera movement and angles and action were what made a film great, the "Transformers" movies would be classics. It's just very interesting to me to compare and contrast the different styles.
