Last month, we spent a few days with friends who live in Bachman's district. They have a brand new house in a brand new neighborhood that is a cross between The Truman Show and The Stepford Wives. The only couple without children in the neighborhood are intentionally shunned and no one can carry on a conversation about anything but children, school bus routes, and the labels on the over priced crap that they are filling their overpriced McMansions with. They are low information because they have chosen to be low information. Bachman's fakery fits perfectly in their manufactured lives.

    •  God, that sounds horrid. (0+ / 0-)

I'd liven that shithole up, that's for sure.  They'd be talking about more than fucking bus routes and Lacoste.

The couple we visited has descended into total dysfunction, too. All outside appearances of complete Stepford happiness while they clearly hate each other and their entire lives.

We have other friends in the area and left after two days to stay with the others; driving out of that neighborhood was like being released from Sartre's version of hell in No Exit.

That's what much of Bachmann's district looks like; at least the wealthy part.  Combine that with the fundies and teabaggers on the northern edge that live for her crazy outbursts, and it's a really warped right-wing world in MN-6.  They aren't embarrassed by her at all.  The sane (progressive) people who do live in her district are mortified by any association with her.  Mention her name and you'll note visible discomfort--if I lived farther south, I'd be in the same boat, but I have my own embarrassment to deal with (Cravaaaaaaaack), who should be an easier eviction.  fingers crossed

The Star Tribune isn't really liberal at all--most of their reporting is inconsequential puff with important issues dealt with in little depth beyond the "he said, she said" crap we're all used to.  And they're VERY sensitive to the bogus accusations of liberal bias coming from Bachmann's district, which is very close to the Twin Cities, so they hold back on reporting actual facts.

The other factor that hasn't been mentioned much is that the Twin Cities and suburbs have a thriving local right-wing radio culture where idiots like Joe Soucheray and Tom Emmer and bundled up with the Hannitys and Limbaughs for all-day liberal-bashing fests.  It's a pretty solid bubble.
