Don't infantilize the Arabs. The Muslim Middle East is a deep rooted civilization that exists outside the West. Viewing everything they do or think or say through the prism of 'US foreign policy' and ignoring their own history, philosophy and society is just another version of the Orientalism that Edward Said spent his lifetime combatting.

    •  Surely that's a less offensive infantilization (1+ / 0-)

than conquering or carving up their lands, propping up despots who serve our interests, and deposing anyone who doesn't.

It's just another aspect of Orientalism. It comes from the exact same place. Presuming the West knows what's best for the poor, ignorant Arabs.

That's what the Islamists are fighting. That attitude. The smugness of the West and it's superiority complex. There were a lot of ways that struggle could have manifested itself - there was a very strong secular/socialist strain in the Middle East in the 20's - 60's but that movement was corrupted into the Nassar/Baathist wing of Pan-Arabism - and don't tell me the West spent much time supporting them. The Soviets, well that's another story.

The Islamist wing of Arab society ended up becoming the voice of that struggle. The reason for that is rooted in Islamic thought, society and philosophy. And yes, that infantilization you so cavalierly dismiss - the one that dismisses the society's own examination of exactly why they fight and attributes it to only one thing - is exactly the attitude that allowed the Europeans to believe they had the right to carve up those lands and install those despots.

        •  Oh, I don't dismiss any of their concerns. (2+ / 0-)

I just don't believe we have the right to bomb them into compliance with our colonialist interests.

          YMMV.

to a difficult question. Jihadists exist. They're not the government, with which you can negotiate. They're invading Mali, which, as far as I can tell, didn't bomb a single Afghan or Pakistani.

And if you dismiss the relationship between those two places you're really not paying attention to the Arabs. You're just being an Orientalist.

            •  We invade lots of countries (0+ / 0-)

that didn't do a thing to us.  So BFHD.

You're just finding convenient masks for your colonialism.

              •  MY colonialism?!? (0+ / 0-)

You're the one applying colonialist/Orientalist thinking to the Middle East when you look at it through the prism of US centric thinking.
