Nowadays, those teachers probably wouldn't dare meet students off school property for fear of lawsuits or accusations of impropriety, sadly.
    Also:

Some of the parents that teachers encounter these days are extremely obnoxious. When I taught high school, a father whose son flunked my class had been given my home phone number (without my consent btw) and left threatening messages on my answering machine. I don't want fools like that to know where I live.

    Besides:

I do have a private life. Ever since a student showed up at my church to turn in late papers (after the deadline to submit grades had already passed), I have made sure that said life is kept private. Students have my office number (I teach college now) and my school email, and THAT'S IT. They don't get to stalk me.

As a student, I have spent time with teachers after hours and even at their houses, but we respected boundaries. We did not show up uninvited, and we did not expect our teachers to drop everything and be at our service.

That said, if a student emails me, requesting a time to meet outside my official office hours, I do everything I can to meet him or her -- in my office, with the door open.
