  •  The Afghan war is a justified war. (5+ / 0-)

No nation can be expected to simply allow a mass murder of its citizens by a group harbored, defended and abetted by an foreign nation.

Iraq--like Vietnam, like Korea--was an unnecessary and unjustified war...as you say, a war for profit.

But Afghanistan is different. It behooves us to recognize the difference, and not to overgeneralize.

when a police action and a smaller force would be sufficient.

There was no large battle for Osama's compound. His killing was accomplished by a small team of highly trained special operatives. Military engagement on the scale we have in Afghanistan accomplished little at great cost. Kabul is not the Kabul that existed before the Taliban, before the Soviet invasion. There is no westernized society we coaxed out of the woodwork, the fundamentalists still have an iron grip on the Afghan people, and military action has obviously not changed that.

While the impetus may have been noble, the goal was unfortunately militarily unfeasible because the enemy was an unorganized and fluid force headed by a single man whose capital moved with him. Capturing Kabul meant about as much as capturing any single cave in Tora Bora.

The entire war on terror could have been limited to a series of targeted special ops attacks, and the overthrow of the Taliban.    Anything else was really un-doable.  Might as well just pay off individual warloads for every step they take toward reform and services they provide to the locals.

    •  Based on those criteria, the Afghanistan (1+ / 0-)

war would have been over after less than 1/2 a year after any "real" terrorists harbored in the country were allowed to exit via Tora Bora . . ..

After that, what you say is complete fucking bullshit.

And if Bush hadn't mangled it, it could've been over and done with in 3-4 years tops.
