    I originally saw the movie first, and it scared the crap out of me.

    A few years later, I read the book. Now that REALLY scared me.

    Kubrick's film goes for the cheap scares. Of course, elevators of blood and Daddy with an ax are scary - duh.

    But what makes the novel scary is that for most of it, the reader doesn't know if the bad things in the hotel are really happening, or if Jack is having one hell of a case of the DTs.

    Yes, the hotel is a Bad Place, but I believe the evil is coming from within Jack. The hotel hijacks that evil to get to Danny.

    As for Shelley Duval in the movie, she was so weak and snivelling that I would kill her were I Jack. I much preferred the portrayal of Wendy as a strong woman who fights back in the TV remake by Rebecca De Mornay.

    I also was stunned to read that Dick Hallorann not only survives in the book, but saves the day.
