    Urban Dictionary

    Tom Friedman Primary

A Tom Friedman Primary occurs when New York Times columnist Tom Friedman pronounces that, in his estimation, so and so has now won an election that has not yet occurred. He often does this in concert with a wholly imaginary cabdriver to whom Friedman assigns opinions he wishes to buttress with stronger support than his own. Owing to the supposed value of Friedman's insights in the Times, many other Very Serious Media People in Washington and New York then repeat or attempt to validate Friedman's off-the-cuff bloviations. The principal rebuttal to all Friedmanism lies in the observation, "The plural of anecdote is not data."

"Mitt Romney decisively loses the Tom Friedman Primary." Essential Reading, 'Time Magazine' Online, Sept 30, 2012

"Every journalist who is not too stupid or too full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible." - Janet Malcolm
