    That's why the VA numbers seemed so crazy in 2008.  The rural numbers came in, giving McCain as much as a 20 point lead.  Then in a sudden flash, the NoVA numbers wiped McCain's lead completely.  Most of the votes were same day votes; the GOP lean of rural votes that first get counted gets muted by the counts of early votes in other states.  NC had early voting.  While Obama barely won there, he led the count nearly the whole time.
