Honestly, I really don't get why people are afraid to kill the filibuster (I am interested in hearing more from the Seneca Doane why he's a filibuster reform skeptic, as he writes above).

Look at it this way - either let the filibuster stand and get nothing of any substance passed (like tax increases on the wealthy, infrastructure bank, etc.) or kill it and get stuff done.  Sure, there's a risk of Republicans regaining control of government someday and passing crazy things, but I'd risk that when we have the opportunity for our team pass good legislation when we are in control of government.

We know that if Republicans regain control of the Senate someday, they're gonna kill it, so let's get rid of it first and pass good legislation while we have the ball on offense.

And finally, it will remove all nuance from why things aren't getting done.  Every single fucking time (sorry, but this pisses me off to no end) I hear an undecided voter frustrated because of gridlock and he/she blames both parties, I just want to smack them and say "yeah, but Republicans are abusing the filibuster and screwing stuff up!".  To your average, low-info voter, that's too complex for them - they understand majority rule; it's simple and it works.  So let's just do that.

used against us in the future by Republicans, whose crazy ideas I want to block.  At this point, though, I think that it can be justified as an emergency and temporary measure (even if not more) based on their unprecedented obstruction.  (And, as has been pointed out, in their present form they'll likely use it against us anyway.)

If Republicans have 51 Senators (or even 50 + VP), they'll get rid of the filibuster anyway, so how could Dems block anything then anyway?

So let's get rid of the filibuster while we're in control and pass good legislation, then report to the people for accountability in elections.

The best way to get rid of crazy ideas is to see them in the open; to publicly shame them and see their horrible results.  This doesn't even work all the time (Akin in MO a fine example, with his election chances still solid, sadly).

I think I'm too young (only 25) to remember any instances were bad legislation was halted because of a filibuster, but I remember plenty of examples of good bills blocked due to a filibuster:

        -Civil Rights legislation
-Medicare (I think, not 100% there)
        -Veterans' Jobs bill
        -Public option in Obamacare

Some of those eventually got passed, but nothing is getting passed with these crazy Repubs in the Senate marching in lockstep.

and the right wing is much weaker. People vote them out if they govern in a right wing mode. People vote for liberals when they liberals are allowed to pursue their agenda.

The filibuster is the enemy of progressive politics, democracy and accountability. Let the voters decide.
