If there were no filibuster, Bush would have privatized social security.  Imagine the devastation the great recession would have caused with privatized SS.  We need to look ahead to times when a determined minority in the Senate is all that saves us from teabagger insanity.

A better solution is to reform the filibuster so that there is a political cost to using it.  Require continuous debate for a filibuster.  Make a filibuster into an action that by definition creates a media circus.  In that case, dems would still be able to filibuster things like SS privatization (and benefit politically from it), while republicans would think twice about filibustering popular measures.

So we'll see what happens during this next two years, hence it being called "an experiment."  It could be back in Jan. 2015.

If I really thought we could stop the Republicans from doing it if we didn't do it, I might feel differently about it.  As it is, they provide no reason to trust them, at all.

    •  No, filibuster is anti-democratic (0+ / 0-)

If GOP had privatized SS the people would have voted them out. Right wing policies are unpopular. We need accountability. Let us compete: a progressive agenda vs a conservative agenda and see who wins. Let the people decide, let there be clear mandates and accountability.

In countries without filibuster rules the left wing is much stronger than in the US. People like liberal policies but aren't allowed to see it here.
