    won't be offered to you, because obviously you're overqualified.

    And getting hired in a STEM field can take months at best, because they are so high friction.

    So people take the Ph.D. off their resumes and go to work for Starbucks to get health insurance and then hope for something better... but every month you work at Starbucks makes you less employable as a scientist.

    Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

      ...and sometimes lives, go to die.  Starbucks health insurance is not that great if you are a barista - you'll quickly go bankrupt if you have any sort of chronic illness.  And as you said, the longer you are without "real" work, the more likely you are to have that scarlet "B" tattooed to your chest the rest of your life.  If you have a spouse with a stable career, that's not great but survivable.  If your spouse depends on YOUR stable career for support, it just screws you both.

      So it's a catch-22, which is why I am so bitter.  But I didn't want to derail the thread completely. :/
